The end of day 12

I've had the pleasure of doing a bunch more play-test sessions over the last few weeks (and two more to come this weekend!).

Here are some quotes culled from the feedback forms that people fill out after playing Anomia. In this case, the players were responding to the challenge of describing Anomia in one sentence. Below are a few of my favorite responses.

"It's exasperating, tense and mind-boggling."

"Cards for people with diarrhea of the mouth."

"Crazy, fast paced word-thinking madness!"

"Remember everything - Now!"

"A constantly evolving battle of speed and tip-of-the-tongue craziness."

"It's slap me and call me a pig fun!"

"Braincrunching fun for the whole family."

So far, I've sold 127 copies of Anomia to 57 people, thanks everyone! Don't forget to pre-purchase your copies now!

The largest individual order to date has been for 15 games...somebody I know is already done with all their holiday shopping!

High Anxiety?

Picture
The other night I had a dream that I was scrambling over an unstable rock wall while my 1 year old daughter was sitting on my shoulders.  I was holding on to her leg with one hand, and with the other hand I was barely able to climb to the top of the wall  and then down to the other side.  At one point I got stuck, unable to go forward or  backward, for fear of my daughter's safety.  Luckily, my wife showed up just in time.

After chastising me for climbing over a 15 foot high rock wall with my daughter on my  shoulders she took our daughter safely into her arms. At that point, we found ourselves on an enormous loading dock. My eye was immediately drawn to a
strange looking vehicle which I can only describe as a mix between a Humvee and a  Badonkadonk Land Cruiser.

The humvee/badonkadonk suddenly lifted in to the air and began the most amazing series of aerial acrobatics that I have ever seen performed by something that, normally, has no business flying through the air.  I found myself fascinated and not a little terrified as it spun around, did loop de loops, came hurtling toward me only to stop on a dime and then rush off in another direction.

Can you say anxiety dream? Anybody care to interpret that for me?  I have my own ideas, and they are all about the fascination and fears centered around starting a new business!  At least my anxiety dreams have cool post-apocalyptic land cruisers in them!

The homestretch

Well, it's 1:30 am, Sunday evening.  I have just finished setting up the official Anomia Press launch email blast.  It will go out tomorrow around 10 am.  The email list is composed of around 650 friends, family and acquaintances. Almost a quarter of the people I am sending my launch email to have actually played Anomia!

I spent a good amount of time figuring out the best way to handle shipping costs for the investor copies of Anomia. It's a bit confusing as I intend to distribute a good deal of the investor copies via launch parties in NYC and Boston this September. I finally decided to just charge a flat fee of $5 bucks. That means I'll wind up eating some of the cost of shipping to the west coast, and i'll just refund the $5 to anyone I wind up hand delivering the game to.  Details, details...

So basically, everything for the launch is pretty much done. I am very excited and wonder how much sleep I will really get tonight!

Almost there

Hey there, so some very significant progress has been made! I haven't had a moment to spare to post anything here, but taking a minute now to give a general update.

Had two really great play-test sessions in the last few weeks. One was with a group of six 12-year old boys.  If you have ever played Anomia, you can just imagine how funny and intense this was! I was also very excited by the response their teacher had.  She immediately saw how much fun the kids were having and also how much potential Anomia has in the education world!

The second play-test session was with a bunch of friends from all these different parts of my life. My friend Gregg (an old friend from  elementary & high school) and his wife Zvia, my friend Liz (I know her from walking my dog in Prospect Park), My friend Juliet (from college) and the gracious hosts, J. and Pam (who I know through my wife!) A great group of people, none of whom knew each other at the start of the night. By the end of the evening we had spilled wine, broken glass and a lot of laughs, always a sign of a good play-testing session in my book!

Also of major significance:  I got my first pre-purchase orders for Anomia!  The award for first customer goes to Emily Flitter, a colleague of mine! Thanks for buying a game Emily!  I also got my first order for $100 (4 games). Thanks to Dale Houston!  In all, I have sold my first 8 games, and I haven't even sent out the official announcement emails yet!  I'm taking this as a good sign.

Finally, I finished making my way through my entire email list..one by one, personally emailing people and letting everyone know to expect the Anomia Press launch email on June 15th, next week.  That's over 600 emails...it took a long time, but I think it was well worth it.

Ok. Off to bed, it's late, I am tired, and there is lot's more to do before next Monday rolls around!

The Cat, The Bag.

Howdy! Well, the next phase has begun... This is where I start personally emailing everyone I know to tell them what I am up to!  I'm not sure how I actually came to know personally, on a first name basis, 600+ people..but wow, I guess I DO know a lot of people!

I sent notes out to everyone with last names in the A's, B's and just scratched the surface of the C's. I'm just trying to connect personally with everyone before I start sending out the more impersonal, mass emails about the official launch on June 15th or 16th.

Some lovely people commented on my FaceBook status which said "I'm starting a business, finally!" That reminds me, I gotta go get the Anomia Press Face Book page up and running!
